What Are You Reading? I

Life is never complete without a good book in hand, but sometimes it takes a few reads to find a decent one. What's your ruby in the rough this month? Or, if you have yet to find one, what has failed to impress you?
I've just finished reading J K Rowling's The Casual Vacancy. She has an amazing imagination and an outstanding ability to create a vivid world, with many individual characters that are so real they practically leap from the page. But therein lies the problem with this book - there is far too many characters. In my opinion it weakens the story considerably.
It's a morbid, depressing read that takes a very realistic view on current life. I read to escape the realities of life, not immerse myself in them, although it does make me feel a lot better about my own life.
Has anyone else read The Casual Vacancy? What did you think of it?

  1. I'm reading Sword of Truth and, to be honest, I'm finding it to be a pile of copy-cat, preachy rubbish. I don't understand how this is in the top 25 best fantasy series'.
Onto Gardens of the Moon next; looking forward to that one!

  2. I'm reading IT. After reading The Stand with it's super thin pages and still bigger than the bible width, I'm rather dreading it despite Mr King's promise of a good read.

    1. Seriously dude, starting with The Stand was a suicidal mistake! I am a huge King fan but I think if I had attempted The Stand first then it wouldn't have been a craze I have. You should have started shorter, maybe with his first novel 'Carrie' or a set of his Novella's like 'Different Season's'. However, I do adore IT and I hope you enjoy it.

    2. Ah... well I've learnt my lesson! While I enjoyed the stand as a story, I'd sit reading for hours at a time and it looked like I wasn't getting anywhere. Perhaps I will try Carrie soon. Thanks for the suggestion :)

  4. Being an older fictionpress reader, it's harder to find works written for my age. I'm very much enjoying Eric lynch and Vespertine at the moment.

  6. Oh dear :s just removed my own reply by mistake. Anyway I said I was reading my way through a huge stack of cliché college rimance books and loving it. A little sad maybe, but I don't care :p.
